If you have lived in Franklinton or Bogalusa for more than a summer, you already know the parish does not really run north-south along Highway 25. It runs along the Bogue Chitto. The river is the reason people keep coming back to the same three or four places between June and September, and it is the reason the fall calendar keeps loading up around a single park in Bogalusa.
This is a weekend built the way a resident actually builds one. It assumes you are not driving in from Covington for the day, that you have your own cooler, and that you would rather know which put-in has the shorter shuttle than read another list of "hidden gems."
The spine is the river, not the town line
The Bogue Chitto touches almost every summer decision worth making here. It runs through Bogue Chitto State Park and ties Franklinton, Enon, and Bogalusa into one practical circuit.
The useful way to plan the weekend is to let the water set the schedule. A river operator’s launch cutoff, a high-water closure, or a late start can change the whole day. Pick the main outdoor block first. Add food, shopping, or an event after that.
That is the difference between a workable circuit and a list you will never finish.
Make one water decision before you load the cooler
Washington Parish gives you three different kinds of water days. They are close enough to compete for the same Saturday, but they do not offer the same experience.

For a float, the correct first step is a same-day call. Published schedules conflict, and high water can stop operations. Ask five questions:
- Are trips running today?
- Which trip lengths are available?
- What is the last check-in time for the trip you want?
- When must everyone be off the river?
- Which directions should you follow once you leave the main road?
That last question matters around Enon. Louisiana River Adventures warns that GPS can be unreliable on the rural approach and provides its own directions.
If you want the traditional float day
Bogue Chitto Tubing Center operates from 10237 South Choctaw Road near Bogalusa. As of July 2026, it lists tubes at $25 with cash or $28 by card, cooler tubes at $10, single kayaks at $30, and double kayaks or canoes at $45.
The operator consistently lists several rules even though its posted cutoff times vary by page. Children must be at least five. Each participant needs a release. Glass, Styrofoam, and pets are not allowed. High water can close the operation.
Louisiana River Adventures operates from 12409 Camp Circle Road in the Enon area. It offers two-hour and four-hour tubing, canoeing, and kayaking trips. Its own site says it opens at 9 a.m. and stops launching guests later in the afternoon, with four-hour trips cutting off earlier. Another tourism listing gives different weekly hours, so verify the day’s schedule directly.
Do not build dinner reservations or evening tickets around the most generous time you find online. Use the cutoff the operator gives you that morning.
If you want more control over the day
Bogue Chitto State Park is the better anchor when your group does not agree on one activity. The park opens daily at 7 a.m. at 17049 State Park Boulevard. As of July 2026, day-use admission is $3 per person, with free admission for children age three and younger and adults age 62 and older.
The mistake is trying to cover the whole park. There are 25 miles of mountain-bike trails, a seven-mile nature trail, 14 miles of equestrian trails, two pump tracks, disc golf, fishing, paddling, and a water playground. Pick a lane.
A practical morning could be one of these:
- Walk the boardwalk near Fricke’s Cave, which is a gorge with delicate sandstone formations. Stay on the boardwalk so those formations are protected.
- Bring bikes and use the trail system or pump tracks.
- Fish early, then move to a picnic area before the afternoon heat.
- Use the quarter-mile paved interactive trail for a shorter outing.
- Reserve a guided horseback ride instead of trying to fit riding around several other activities.
Bogue Chitto Horse Rentals operates inside the park. Current posted rates start at $60 for a one-hour public ride and $120 for a two-hour public ride. Online booking closes 24 hours before a scheduled ride. Private and longer rides require more planning.
Riders bringing their own horses pay an additional $3 per horse per day and need proof of a clean Coggins test. Call the park about trail conditions before hauling in.
The water playground is scheduled to operate Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It closes Mondays for cleaning. The park still recommends calling to confirm that it is open.
If you want a beach setup without the river current
White Sands Lake Day Beach is at 52129 Sandstone Boulevard in Enon. It is a self-contained, spring-fed lake rather than part of the Bogue Chitto River.
Current posted hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $20 for guests age 12 and older, $15 for children ages three through 11 and for seniors or military guests, and free for children under three.
White Sands does not have lifeguards. Staff members are CPR-certified and monitor the waterfront, but the facility operates under swim-at-your-own-risk rules. Water under the main inflatable features is about 18 feet deep. Treat flotation and active supervision as requirements for your own plan, not optional extras.
Let the earliest cutoff build Saturday
A clean Saturday circuit starts early and leaves room for one town stop.
Early morning: Buy water, ice, sunscreen, and food before heading toward the river. Franklinton’s former Winn-Dixie at 731 Washington Street reopened as a Rouses Market in early 2026, making it a practical supply stop. It should not replace a local lunch stop later in the day.
Morning through early afternoon: Float the Bogue Chitto, use the state park, or spend the day at White Sands. Do not combine two major water activities just because they appear close on a map.
Late lunch or early supper: Choose Franklinton if you are finishing near the state park or Enon. The parish tourism directory lists Bessie’s Sweet Retreat, Café Bouchée, Glynn’s Drive In Express, Juneau’s Cajun Meats, Lane’s Chicken & Seafood, Red Brick Cafe, Sugar Shack, Tienda Latina Rosy Restaurant, and What’s Up Coffee. Check weekend hours before committing.
If the route carries you toward Bogalusa, Kurt and Judy’s Golden Pear has served daytime meals there since 2001. Coach’s Poboys at 400 Masonic Drive is another named local option. Again, verify that the kitchen will still be open when your float ends.
Late day: Finish with one event or park stop. This weekend has an easy answer.
For July 11, finish at the Watermelon Festival
The Washington Parish Watermelon Festival is underway today at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds, 100 Main Street in Franklinton. General festival admission is free. The official event site lists vendors, watermelon contests, a car show, and live entertainment.
Saturday programming includes a rodeo at 5 p.m. and Magnolia Rising at 7:30 p.m. Rodeo tickets are separate from free festival admission. The Town of Franklinton’s daytime listing ends at 5 p.m., while the festival promotes later entertainment. Check the official festival page for same-day changes before heading to the fairgrounds.
If the festival is your priority, do not force a four-hour float into the same day. Use the state park for an early walk, fishing session, or bike ride, then leave enough time to clean up, eat, and reach the fairgrounds without rushing.
River safety is the hard line
The Bogue Chitto is a natural river with current, shallows, stumps, and debris. Recent events make that point plain. On June 6, 2026, an 18-year-old tuber died after going underwater in the river. That loss deserves a direct response: take flotation, water conditions, and group accountability seriously.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries requires a properly sized, serviceable, Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device for each person aboard a canoe or kayak. Carrying one may satisfy a rule in some situations, but wearing it is the sound choice on moving water.
Use this checklist before launching:
- Confirm that the operator is open and running your selected trip.
- Check the Bogue Chitto river gauge at Franklinton, then rely on the operator’s decision about whether trips are running.
- Wear a properly fitted life jacket.
- Use water shoes.
- Secure keys and phones, and leave unnecessary valuables ashore.
- Pack more drinking water than you expect to use.
- Keep the group together and account for everyone at stops.
- Do not mix alcohol with boating or poor judgment.
- Leave glass and Styrofoam at home.
Flood warnings affected the river at Franklinton in May and June 2026. A clear sky at your house does not tell you what the river is doing. Check before leaving.
Keep Sunday slower
Sunday works best as the part of the circuit you did not force into Saturday.
If Saturday was on the river, return to Bogue Chitto State Park for a trail, pump-track session, fishing, or disc golf. If Saturday was festival-heavy, use White Sands for a later start. If you want motorized recreation, make Zona ATV Park its own full-day plan. The park lists 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours, and minors attending without a parent need a notarized waiver.
For a heat or rain pivot, consider the D.A. Varnado Store Museum at 936 Pearl Street in Franklinton. Its own pages publish conflicting weekend hours, so call before driving over.
A short shopping stop can fill the same gap. The tourism commission lists Franklinton Gifts, Georgia Peach Boutique, Mulberry Corner Pottery & Mercantile, Silver Leaf Boutique, and Tyler Ross Jewelry in the Franklinton area. Bogalusa options include Wild Blu Boutique and Gayle’s Jewelers. Do not assume Sunday hours.

The summer circuit hands off to a strong fall calendar.
- September 25 and 26: The Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival returns to Cassidy Park. Announced performers include Mr. Sipp, Peyton Falgoust Band, Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers, Randy Jackson of Zebra, Angela Easley, Steve Blaze, and Christian Serpas.
- October 2: Bogue Chitto State Park lists the Roller Coaster of Love Mountain Bike Festival, tying the fall calendar back to the park’s trails and pump tracks.
- October 21 through 25: The Washington Parish Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Franklinton.
Cassidy Park is where the summer route reaches Bogalusa and where the fall music calendar takes over. The state park and Franklinton fairgrounds carry the circuit forward from there.
That is the local pattern worth keeping: one main outdoor plan, one town stop, and one event. You see more of Washington Parish when you stop trying to cover all of it in a day.
